Notice of Motion – Parliament of Tasmania

May 2018


Hon Jacquie Petrusma [Member for Franklin] to move – That the House notes:-

  • Notes that Monday 21st May marks the start of National Volunteer Week with the theme this year Give a little. Change a lot;

  • Commends Volunteer Tasmania for the work they do as the peak body for volunteers across the State through supporting and promoting the vital contribution volunteers make to Tasmania;

 

  • Recognises the Tasmanian Government has committed more $1 million over the next 3 years to support Volunteering Tasmania’s vital work;

 

  • Notes that without volunteers and their hours of dedication many of the events and support we take for granted would simply not exist;

 

  • Further notes that as well as marking the beginning of National Volunteer Week, Monday 21st also saw the 3rd Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards hosted by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC at Government House and that;
  1. Southern Cross Television should be acknowledged and thanked for their sponsorship of the event as well as the individual sponsors of each category
  2. Over 200 nominations were received from across Tasmania for this year’s awards
  3. 27 individuals and organisations across 9 categories were recognised as finalists for 2018
  4. Mr Les William’s was announced as the 2018 Premier’s Volunteer of the Year
  5. 2018 marks Mr Williams 60th year of volunteering for a number of causes
  6. In 1978 Mr Williams joined the Huntington’s Disease Association of Tasmania and has become a champion for the cause and his support for families suffering from the disease has been inspirational

 

  • Takes this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers across Tasmania for the contribution they make and encourage organisations and individuals to consider nominating a worthy individual for the work they do when nominations open for the 2019 awards.
