Momentous AFLW match paves the way for Tassie girls
Sunday, 3rd February 2019
Today’s landmark AFLW season opener between the North Melbourne Tassie Kangaroos and Carlton at North Hobart Oval confirms that Tasmanian girls and women can aspire and be selected for the highest levels of professional sport.
For the first time, Tasmania will be able to watch elite female athletes take to the football field, with the clash also to be broadcast nation-wide.
Opportunities are growing for Tasmanian women and girls to pursue their passion, whether it be in sport, business, or the community, and the Hodgman Liberal Government is there to back them in achieving their goals.
The Liberal Government is a strong supporter of growing the number of young girls and women in all sports, and Tasmania has seen a surge in the number of female football teams in Tasmania – growing from seven to 62 over the past two years.
The $2.5 million deal over five years with NMFC will not only see Tasmania represented in the AFLW, but also see the establishment of all-girls Auskick centres, increased coaching and talent identification programs.
The Government is also creating more opportunities to participate in sport by making the largest per capita investment into women’s and girl’s sporting facilities in the nation.
Through our $10 million Levelling the Playing Field commitment, we are partnering with sporting organisations, local government, and individual sporting clubs, to upgrade and build new female-friendly facilities.
