Notice of Motion - Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Tuesday 19th June, 2012
I give notice that, on tomorrow, I shall move
That this House notes
- That 15th June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, with the theme My World...Your World...Our World Free of Elder Abuse
- That more than 4,000 of the 84,000 Tasmanians aged over 65 years are being deceived out of their money by someone they think they can trust.
- That Council of the Ageing Tasmania states that the rate of financial abuse will continue to rise as the population ages.
- The Labor-Green governments proposed dedicated phone help-line, advocacy and counselling services have still not proceeded.
- The Guardianship and Administration Board has stated: As no single agency is yet charged with the standardised collection of data about elder abuse, it is difficult to quantify how much abuse is occurring.
- The phrase tip of the iceberg is often used in regards to Elder Abuse, and every example is one example too many. A comprehensive strategy across both state and Federal Governments is desperately needed to be fast tracked to ensure that Elder Abuse is minimised and that people feel supported and safe in their later years.
