Kangaroos AFLW 2018
Notice of Motion – Parliament of Tasmania
May 2018
Hon Jacquie Petrusma [Minister for Sport and Recreation] to move – That the House notes:-
- Acknowledges that in the 2019 AFLW season, Geelong and North Melbourne/Tasmania will both join the competition along with the 8 original teams;
- Recognises that the Kangaroos squad will be made up of 50% Tasmanian players, have a permanent training base in Tasmania and will play half of its home matches in Tasmania wearing a special Tassie Guernsey;
- Congratulates Maddy Smith on being the first Tasmanian to sign a contract with the new North Melbourne/Tasmania franchise, along with Tasmanians Brittany Gibson and Daria Bannister who have also signed with the Kangaroos;
- Agrees with The Mercury (27th September 2017) which stated that “the AFLW licence is the biggest precursor to an AFL men’s team Tasmania has ever had”;
- Wishes Kangaroos Senior AFLW coach Scott Gowans and all of the players every success in their inaugural season; and
- Also acknowledges the Hodgman Liberal Government’s long term goal of having Tasmanian teams in both the AFL and AFLW so that the League can finally be recognised as a truly national competition.
