Minister for Human Services
Notice of Motion – Foster Carers Week, 2017
12 September, 2017

Madam Speaker, I give notice that on tomorrow I shall move that this House notes that:

(1) Foster Carers Week is being celebrated in Tasmania from the 10th to the 16th September, to highlight the commitment of foster and kinship carers in providing safe and supportive care for children and young people who cannot live safely at home;

(2) The peak advocacy group providing support to Tasmanian foster and kinship carers, Foster and Kinship Carers Association of Tasmania, is to be congratulated for their work in highlighting the important nurturing support role undertaken by our foster and kinship carers right around Tasmania;

(3) FKAT is also contributing to the current reform of the Tasmanian Out of Home Care system by providing feedback and guidance on a range of possible future care models;

(4) There are many children and young people under the age of 18 years who are supported and cared for each night by their foster or kinship carer. Our carers are a vital element of Tasmania’s Out of Home Care system and the Government congratulates and thanks them for their love and support of some of Tasmania’s most vulnerable children and young people;

(5) The Government also congratulates and thanks all our non-government organisations and Child Safety Services staff for the role they play in providing care and support for our foster and kinship carers and children and young people in need.
